In the early 2000s when golf carts were making their way beyond the greens and onto the hitches of RV’s, David Mallet saw an opportunity. An RV owner himself at the time, David saw the growing interest in carts not only among fellow campers but among folks using the electric vehicles to putter around visiting friends in their neighborhoods or going to nearby restaurants and shops. He realized an opportunity and jumped on, and it’s been a ride ever since.
After buying a couple of second-hand E-Z-Go carts from Plano, TX in 2009 and quickly flipping them, David soon started building, repairing and customizing golf carts from his home as a side job. Word got around and several years later, in 2017, he and his wife, Monica, opened Coteau Custom Carts, a business that has grown to be the only authorized golf cart dealer of EVolution, Icon and Star EV (electric vehicles) in South Louisiana.
Located between Coteau and Delcambre, Coteau Custom Carts has 6,000 square feet of showroom and sales floor along with a second outdoor show area. With son Cody as manager, the Mallets offer the largest selection of two, four and six-seater carts as well as accessories and customizations.
Skilled repair technicians can work on any model golf cart, as well as power equipment and generators.
For customers wanting to personalize their ride, customization experts can enhance carts with lights, speakers, decals or a custom build. You can also find just about any accessory needed including batteries, wheels and tires, custom stereo systems, stirring wheels, armrests, back seat kits, mirrors, and seat belts.
Coteau Custom is not only the only authorized dealer of EVolution – the Cadillac of golf carts – it is the largest dealer in Louisiana. “EVolution is the fastest selling golf cart in the country because they come with customized features,” says David of its popularity.
Souped-up golf carts can include LED under glow lights, blue tooth music and sound bar, touch screens, reverse camera, and the newest feature: lithium-ion battery packs. “We specialize in those batteries,” says David “99 percent of carts have them.”
Coteau Custom Carts can also provide air conditioning to the carts as well as rain enclosures. “New carts even have stilt stirring. And we’ve recently added models with voice activation,” adds David, who is always on top of market trends.
When he noticed, over the last couple of years, customers wanting utility trailers to haul their carts, he began handling Buck Dandy trailers and offering special packages on carts and trailers purchased together.
If this all sounds great, but you’re on a tighter budget, no problem. Coteau Custom Carts sells used and refurbished golf carts in great condition.
You would be hard-pressed to find better customer service in this industry than offered here. The business has won the Best of the Teche awards for “Best Outdoor Equipment” in 2020, 2021 and 2023. Most noteworthy, the Mallets gained national attention when they were profiled in Golf Carting magazine, the largest golf magazine in the country, twice in the last four years.
We at the Delcambre Market are happy to have Coteau Custom Carts as a sponsor that provides a cart for transporting customers to and from the market.
