Jeremy Guidry says he and his wife, Stephanie, quickly fell in love with Delcambre after a few fishing trips at Bayou Carlin Cove. So much so that the Maurice residents searched for a place on the bayou that could serve as a family camp. Not long after finding what they considered the “perfect place,” they decided to share it with the community and opened Down Da Bayou Lodge, just off of Hwy. 14.
Since opening this April, Down Da Bayou has been met with positive response from out-of-towners and locals alike – and for good reason. Situated on the banks of the Delcambre canal, the three-bedroom, two-bath Lodge, with sprawling grounds, is quickly proving itself to be a great place for family gatherings and making special memories.
The living room – where lots of light floods through – features new furniture, an electric fireplace, a 65” TV (great for hosting a Super Bowl party) and a foosball table. The cooks in the family will appreciate the fully-stocked kitchen, complete with a large island, that is open to the living room.
Enjoy your morning coffee or a late afternoon cocktail while sitting under the covered patio, on the swing of the boat deck or on the grounds at the fire pit, all overlooking the water. It’s a great place to admire egrets, blue herons and other wildlife and watch the boats go by – or bring your own.
Take advantage of the boat dock, with its 6,500-pound lift, and do some fishing. With canal access to Lake Peigneur and Vermilion Bay, guests have reportedly enjoyed catching red fish, black drum, croakers and catfish. Or if you prefer, seasonal shrimp and live crabs can be bought in town and boiled at the Lodge.
A short boat ride, or drive, from the Lodge is the historic Jefferson Island. Twenty minutes away is Avery Island. In the opposite direction, you have Abbeville and some great seafood restaurants. And if you plan your staycation right, you can visit the Delcambre Seafood & Farmers Market just a little over a mile away, the first Saturday of the month, from March through December.
Barely four months open, Down Da Bayou Lodge has already welcomed international guests from Switzerland, the UK, France and Canada. “And, the locals love it as a place for family members visiting for the holidays to stay nearby,” adds Jeremy. “I like to hear about people’s experiences at the Lodge and what they love about the area. My favorite is when guests want to buy shrimp off the fishing boats.”
